The vast majority of war conflicts cannot be fitted into the “Hitler” template. Most war conflicts in history have eventually been settled by negotiation, and appeasement has led not to another war but to peace.

On the contrary, it was Hitler’s thinking that promoted the mentality of “no compromise, the enemy must be utterly destroyed.” It was Adolf Hitler who gave the war the form of “all or nothing, annihilation of you or annihilation of us.” So did the Mongols or the Turks, but this is unprecedented in modern European history.

It was Adolf Hitler who gave the war the form of “all or nothing, annihilation of you or annihilation of us.”

That is why wise men, on the one hand, encouraged the belligerence of their fellow citizens, but on the other hand, did not take steps that would ultimately hinder an agreement.

Calling an opponent Hitler is, paradoxically, a typical manifestation of the mentality that Adolf Hitler brought. Note that during the Cold War, Americans did not label any Soviet leader as Hitler (and vice versa).

Whoever shouts ‘Hitler’ at another is himself like Hitler.
