One further point regarding the murder of Henry Nowak. In reports translated from English, it is not immediately obvious, but every responding officer was female. Yes, three middle-aged policewomen coldly allowed that teenage boy to bleed to death. They even handcuffed him and mocked him. And it bears repeating that he was not some tattooed, muscular thug whom they might have perceived as a violent fighter, but rather a sweet, defenseless-looking boy. One of them may well have had a son much like him at home.
The affair does not have merely a political dimension. In its own way, it also functioned as a social and psychological experiment, one whose outcome forces us to reconsider the claim that women are inherently more compassionate than men. From an evolutionary standpoint, the idea never made much sense anyway. Women are more compassionate than men in environments where such behavior is expected of them. In environments where hostility toward white men or the mistreatment of Jews is socially rewarded, they become something else.
It should also be remembered that women — far more than men — have a tendency to imitate one another’s behavior. Had there been ten more policewomen present, they likely would have behaved with the same severity.
But the underlying principle remains. Even cats seek first to protect their offspring, second to ensure their own survival, then — after a very large gap — everything else.
