“It’s conceivable that we support the Ukrainian regime because we are pursuing some of our own interests (like weakening Putin’s regime in Russia), but that doesn’t change the fact that it is a disgusting, corrupt tyranny and that working with someone like that makes you sick. The kind of thing where you shake someone’s hand and then have to wash your hands a hundred times and still feel miserable.” I wrote this in January 2024 in response to the torture of American journalist Gonzalo Lira by the Ukrainian secret police.

The new US administration apparently shares that assessment and, moreover, has no strategic reason to support the Ukrainian fascist regime. But it is not just a question of what one abhors.

NATO was defeated in the war in Ukraine and the culprits are being sought. Who dragged America into a completely unnecessary war that has cost the country hundreds of billions of dollars, reduced its combat capability, damaged the position of the dollar and caused other incredible damage? Victoria Nuland and her gang, of course. But they were not alone.

Now America’s wrath is falling on the Ukrainians, but it doesn’t have to end there. Anyone who has been following the American political debate knows that since 2022 there have been occasional complaints about difficult allies who are actually dangerous nutcases and could cause more Vietnam for the Americans – the Czech Republic, Poland and the Baltics. Now those voices, previously marginal, are getting a voice. So it is quite conceivable that for the foreseeable future America will not only suck us dry, but actively punish us.

To be sure, Czech diplomacy is working hard to ensure that we are not forgotten in Washington. The Czech Foreign Minister is bypassing American politicians and reminding them that the Czech Republic wants to escalate the war at any cost. The ‘ammunition initiative’ is again publicly mentioned and said to be continuing. All this is accompanied by public insults to the US President.

I fear that the American view of the Czech Republic will not change with Fial’s departure. However, history knows one solution. Flamboyant political trials of the leaders of the previous regime or influential figures who supported involvement in the war. This might satisfy the presidents of the powers.
