The worst thing is that there is a complete lack of a positive vision. What will happen after the covid? If we don’t want the impoverishment of the New Green Deal, what do we want instead? People see only negative things, they reinforce each other and fall into depression, from which it is only a step to unnecessary aggression. There’s no such thing as a soldier in a trench saying to himself: If I survive this, I’ll open a pub on our hill, with red tablecloths and the best beer in the district. I’ll hire a busty waitress and ogle her.

Our country has ceased to be an environment that allows for dreaming and planning.

Our country has ceased to be an environment that allows for dreaming and planning. Perhaps only a few Prague intellectuals can dream of being taken to Brussels or working directly for George Soros. A few exceptional specialists can dream of making it in the global market. And a few girls may dream of becoming models or making it to Hollywood. But most residents have nothing to dream about.

So what can we do to get people excited about the future again?

It is hard to dream of a large family unless there is affordable housing and the kind of jobs that will enable that family to support itself.

The fate of individuals and families is linked to the fate of the nation. It is impossible to dream of new pubs until the state creates conditions that make it easy for anyone who wants to work hard. This is true in all walks of life. It is hard to dream of a large family unless there is affordable housing and the kind of jobs that will enable that family to support itself. It is hard for a young man to dream of the amazing and daring things he will design and build when most factories have moved production abroad. We need a vision of a separate and independent nation-state to work out such a vision together. A vision that is realistic, but bold and forward-looking. A vision that allows people to dream again.
